The soul selects her own society

-Emily Dickinson

The soul selects her own society,
selects=chooses, as a voter does
Then shuts the door,
To her divine majority
divine majority=power to choose (or vote) as an adult
majority=coming of age

Present no more.
present - the adjective (opposite of absent)

Unmoved, she notes the chariots pausing
At her low gate.
Unmoved, an emperor be kneeling
be kneeling=who is kneeling
(as an American citizen, she is not impressed)

Upon her mat.
mat=door mat

I've known her from an ample nation
ample nation=entire pool of possible candidates for office
Choose one,
one=one loved person
Then close the valves of her attention
Like stone.

The soul selects her own society,
Then shuts the door,
To her divine majority
Present no more.

Unmoved, she notes the chariots pausing
At her low gate.
Unmoved, an emperor be kneeling
Upon her mat.

I've known her from an ample nation
Choose one,
Then close the valves of her attention
Like stone.
